About Stye and Chalazia
A stye (also known as hordeolum) is a painful, red bump that appears on the edge of the eyelid, caused by a bacterial infection of oil glands. Chalazia, on the other hand, are swollen lumps within the eyelid, caused by blocked oil glands, and usually painless.
Both styes and chalazia affect the appearance and comfort of your eyes, but they differ in causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches.
Causes of Stye and Chalazia
Stye Causes:
- Bacterial infections, commonly Staphylococcus bacteria
- Poor eyelid hygiene
- Rubbing eyes with dirty hands
- Excessive use of cosmetics
Chalazion Causes:
- Blocked Meibomian (oil) glands
- Untreated or frequent styes
- Chronic conditions like blepharitis or rosacea
- Poor eyelid hygiene
Types of Stye and Chalazia
- Stye:
- External stye: Develops at the base of the eyelash.
- Internal stye: Forms inside the eyelid due to infected oil glands.
- Chalazion:
- Typically forms as a single lump within the eyelid. Multiple chalazia can form in some cases, but this is less common.
Symptoms of Stye and Chalazia
Stye Symptoms:
- A red, painful lump near the edge of the eyelid
- Swelling and tenderness

- Watery eyes
- Pus discharge in severe cases
Chalazion Symptoms:
- A painless, firm lump on the eyelid
- Mild eyelid swelling
- Sensation of heaviness in the eyelid
- Blurred vision if the lump grows large enough to press against the eye
